Transcription: This marble statue of Sam Houston was contributed by the state of Texas. Houston was Tennessee's U.S. Representative and Governor before taking the first steps toward the annexation of Texas. He later served as Texas' Senator and Governor before being deposed by southern leaders because he refused to pledge allegiance to the Confederacy. Sam Houston lived from 1793 to 1863.
